“Seek a firm footing in the depths” Solidum petit in profundis – “Seek a firm footing in the depths” reads the inscription on the seal of The University of Aarhus.
With more than 20,000 Bachelor and Master’s students, 700 PhD students, 2,500 open university students and around 5,000 employees, The University of Aarhus has the population of a large provincial town and is just like a “city within the city”. The university has succeeded in maintaining the same style of building throughout its 70 years, and its distinctive yellow-brick buildings set in the beautiful green University Park have won international renown for their architecture. |

Five faculties and 80 courses of study
So what do they get up to behind those yellow-brick walls? Research and teaching are conducted in 50 departments, grouped together into five faculties.
The Rector, who is both elected by and from within the ranks of the academic staff, runs the university together with the Director of Administration.
There are approximately 80 different courses of study to choose from, spanning a range of subjects from Astrophysics, Medicine or Hebrew to European Cultural Studies or Economics.

The Nobel Prize
The university’s academic staff undertake both teaching and research.
The research is, by nature, internationally orientated, and researchers’ closest collaborators are frequently other research colleagues from all parts of the world.
The quality of research at The University of Aarhus received the highest international recognition when, in 1997, Emeritus Professor Jens Chr. Skou was awarded The Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his discovery of the sodium-potassium pump.

The city and the university
“University Education in Jutland” began in 1928 with 78 students.
The University of Aarhus operated as a private foundation until 1970, when it became a part of the state educational system like all the other universities in Denmark.
Nevertheless, while part of the state system, the university continues to have a close working relationship with the municipal authorities, business life and other institutions in Aarhus, and Science Park Aarhus is a good example of this cooperation.
