A strong IT city becomes even stronger
Aarhus has a vision. The vision is to make the city even stronger within the IT area. Aarhus currently has one of the strongest and most comprehensive IT environments in Denmark. Not least because Århus has the country’s highest density of highly educated employees in the IT sector. Trade and industry, politicians and educational institutions want to expand this position even further.
One of the key people in this work is Preben Mejer, IT prophet, venture capitalist and Managing Director of TDC Internet.
Århus has a strong position because the city has a competence cluster consisting of educational institutions, research centres and trade and industry, says Preben Mejer.
The continual stream of graduates covers the future need for manpower. As a minimum, Århus has all the prerequisites for achieving the same positive development as other national IT centres, e.g. Cambridge in England, Espoo in Finland and Kista in Sweden.
Preben Mejer is just one of many IT people in Århus working hard to realise the city’s IT vision. The IT sector, which totals more than 1,000 companies – from small entrepreneurs to large workplaces such as LEC, CCI, Terma, Systematic, Columbus and Cotas – is doing the same. At the same time, there is considerable focus on education and research, with the University of Aarhus and the new development centre, the IT City Katrinebjerg, leading the way. Furthermore, there is wide political support for providing the IT sector with the best possible conditions for growth.

Århus is particularly strong within software development. This is true within trade and industry, where Århus is domicile to large IT companies such as CCI, a world-leader within the development of newspaper systems, as well as Systematic Software Engineering, the largest privately owned software company in Denmark. It is also within research where Århus has a leading role internationally within object technology, hypermedia, human-machine interaction and computer-supported working methods.

Århus has a vision.
The vision is rooted in a particularly dynamic and fast-growing IT environment, driven on by highly educated employees. In the coming years, this vision is certain to establish Århus’ position on the IT map of the world.
The Aarhus region has a strong position within the IT area. A unique synergy between industry, research and education will strengthen this position further in the coming years. The IT City Katrinebjerg will be the place to be.
This new growth centre for information technology will demolish the barriers between private innovation, public research and future-oriented education in an open campus where creativity and dynamics will reflect a continuously changing IT world.

The IT City Katrinebjerg will host a wide range of IT courses and will function as a base for a research environment where public and private companies cooperate.
There are also plans for an incubator environment with facilities for entrepreneurs, an IT Business Centre, an IT infrastructure with, for example, high-speed gigabyte networks and a number of open facilities for the public.
At Katrinebjerg the future has started. Aarhus and Copenhagen are already the two strongest IT regions in Denmark.
With the IT City Katrinebjerg playing a central role, the strength of Aarhus in the IT area will increase even further.
