Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1935, has become one of the cultural flagships of the city of Århus. The artistic cornerstone of the orchestra’s activities is the season of symphony concerts at The Concert Hall Aarhus.
In addition to the main concert season, the orchestra gives numerous family concerts, Saturday matinées, chamber concerts, church concerts and free concerts in the foyer or the concert hall of The Concert Hall Aarhus as well as summer concerts at The Riding School. Furthermore, the orchestra performs every year at Skanderborg Festival and gives symphony concerts in other towns in Denmark.
Aarhus Symphony Orchestra offers a wide range of concert events featuring Danish and foreign conductors and soloists of an international standard. The repertoire is varied, spanning 300 years of music.
Numerous works by primarily Danish composers have been performed for the first time by Aarhus Symphony Orchestra.

Another important aspect of the orchestra’s activities is its CD recordings. The orchestra has, for example, recorded works by Vagn Holmboe, Schubert and Delius. James Loughran, a Scottish conductor of international renown, has been the orchestra’s chief conductor since 1996. Since then, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra has released serenades by Brahms and Dvo˘rák, while the complete works of Rachmaninov for piano and orchestra are currently being recorded. Aarhus Symphony Orchestra performs at the annual Århus-based NUMUS festival of contemporary music and cooperates with a large number of other institutions, in particular The Danish National Opera.
Aarhus Symphony Orchestra has toured in Sweden, Finland, Canada, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Spain, Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom and Germany and has given concerts at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and at the Edinburgh Festival.
