The City Museum of Aarhus

The year 1993 saw the opening of the City Museum of Aarhus in the old station building from the Hammel railway. In 1998, the museum was approved by the Danish Ministry of Culture as a museum entitled to subsidies, and the museum assumed responsibility for covering the history of Aarhus from the Viking Age until the present time, while at the same time being responsible for the cultural history of recent years throughout the Municipality of Aarhus. A special area of activity for the City Museum of Aarhus is the history of the labour movement in Aarhus.

The museum has, from the outset, organised a wide range of exhibitions at the museum’s own premises as well as at a variety of locations in Aarhus. Every year, the museum organises a number of historical walks through the various districts of Aarhus.

The museum also plays an active role in connection with cases involving the listing of buildings and has a cooperation agreement with the Museum of Prehistory at Moesgaard concerning archaeology in Aarhus.
In 2003, the construction of a much-needed extension to the museum commences.

Covering 1,200 square metres, the new extension will primarily be used for permanent exhibitions about the history of Aarhus from the Viking Age, through the Middle Ages, the merchants and Industrialisation until the present time.

A café and an auditorium will also be added.
