Tradition and innovation combined

As recently as the 19th century, the Havreballe woods, home of Tivoli Friheden today, was not a safe place to travel.

This was a hangout for shady characters who had no qualms about robbing people on their way into town.

But those times are long gone. Today, every visitor is welcome in Århus’ beautiful amusement park, where the new management endeavours to maintain a balance between tradition and innovation.

The tradition can be dated back to 1904, when Friheden (the name means "freedom") opened as a beer garden. The oldest part of Restaurant Terrassen ("the terrace") bears witness to this even today. Tivoli Friheden opened half a century later, and since then the park has had a prominent position on the list of the most popular tourist attractions in East Jutland. This is clearly evident from the 300,000 people who visit every year.

The innovation is apparent from the roughly DKK 10 million that has been invested in commitment to improvements to the gardens as well as new attractions for the entire family since the private takeover in 2000. The most popular draw is the new Sky Tower that offers a 100-foot free fall.
