Aarhus – a new transport centre for Icelandic fish
Fishing is the principal industry and primary export business of Iceland. It is therefore vital to maintain the high quality, which is characteristic of Icelandic fish products, during transport to the buyers. The vessels “Dettifoss” and “Godafoss”, owned by the transport and investment company Eimskip, play a key role in this regard.
The two vessels are based in Reykjavik, and every week they alternately call at Tórshavn (Faroe Islands), Rotterdam, Hamburg, Aarhus, Gothenburg and Fredrikstad (Norway) carrying bulk fish containers. They then return to Tórshavn and Reykjavik carrying other cargo.

Eimskip Denmark A/S was established in March 2001. The registered office is situated in Aarhus, while service and booking is carried out in Copenhagen. According to Managing Director Helgi Ingólfsson, the choice of Aarhus as the base for future activities was made on account of the importance of the Port of Aarhus as a goods-handling centre, as well as the city’s favourable location in relation to Eimskip’s shipping routes.
Eimskip – The Iceland Steamship Company Ltd – was established in 1914. Today, the company has 1,200 employees, making it one of Iceland’s largest private companies specialising in complete transport solutions.
