The Danish Dairy Board is the dairy industry’s trade organisation.

The organisation handles all joint interests of the Danish dairy companies and dairy farmers.

There are approximately 9,000 dairy farmers in Denmark who supply 4.5 billion kilograms of milk to just over 40 dairies.

Most of the milk is processed and sold for exports.

Cheese is the most important export item, while Lurpak butter is also known throughout the world. In 2000, exports of dairy products yielded 12.5 billion Danish kroner.

As a trade organisation, the Danish Dairy Board is charged with the important task of monitoring the laying-down of dairy and agricultural policies within the EU. The Danish Dairy Board therefore has its own lobby office in Brussels.

Together with the organisation Danish Cattle, the Danish Dairy Board offers advice on milk quality and veterinary matters. Furthermore, the Danish Dairy Board participates in the eradication of cattle diseases and in research into aspects of relevance to cattle farming.

The Danish Dairy Board also publishes a popular series of cookery books (Karolines Køkken), which is distributed to all households in Denmark free of charge. Furthermore, the Danish Dairy Board is in charge of the distribution and sale of milk to state schools as well as engaging in occasional campaigning to promote dairy products.

The Danish Dairy Board also administers the allocation of milk quotas, while also funding basic dairy research.
