Denmark is a centre of excellence in food. In relative terms food production, food exports and food-related know-how including R&D are more heavily represented than in any other country. And in Denmark, the City of Århus is the Danish Food Capital.

Nowhere else is such a concentration of food-related activities to be found. Århus is home to a number of very significant companies in the food industry:

· Arla Foods – the biggest dairy company in Europe
· Danish Crown – the biggest meat company in Europe
· Danisco-Cultor – a world player in food ingredients
· Aarhus Olie – a strong international player in speciality fats
· GEA – one of the world’s dominant food technology engineering companies

On top of these major companies there are an abundance of smaller and medium-sized innovative food and food industry related companies. The research and application know-how present in the food capital is simply second to none.

Århus – the Danish Food Capital is also home to the internationally recognised MAPP Centre, based at the Aarhus School of Business Administration. The centre specialises in consumer research and marketing, exclusively focused at the food sector.

So although the IT and biotech sectors are growing strongly, the food sector is still the dominant industrial activity in the Århus region.

A quality-conscious home market is essential for an ever more demanding international market. Good quality food is based on a dialogue between consumers, retailers, chefs, product and process experts and manufacturers. Stringent public authorities also play an important role. And not least good raw materials from agriculture and the fishing industry. All these elements are abundantly present in Århus – the Danish Food Capital.
