Department of Ophthalmology on the world map
Located in the centre of the “World’s Smallest Big City”, the ophthalmological department in Aarhus is internationally renowned for its achievements. The ophthalmologists at Aarhus University Hospital are at the forefront of ophthalmic surgery, and they are regarded as the best in Denmark by fellow ophthalmologists, both in terms of efficiency and research. The ophthalmological department’s cornea bank has won international recognition, not least because there are no financial interests involved. The department is also known for its screening clinic where diabetic eye complications are traced and treated. Each year, the department performs 3,000 cataract operations, cataracts being one of the most frequent ophthalmic diseases in elderly patients.

Patients from other ophthalmological departments in Denmark are to a large extent referred to Aarhus for cornea transplants, the treatment of eye tumours as well as retinal and vitreous diseases.

Consultant in the snow
Kim Frost is a consultant at the Department of Ophthalmology at Aarhus University Hospital. A specialist in eye disorders and retinal and vitreous surgery, he performs some 350 eye operations annually. At the same time, he is one of those making a positive contribution to the department’s public image. Each year, he goes to Greenland with six or seven colleagues to examine the eyes of the Greenland population as the country has no permanent ophthalmologists or eye clinics.

For Kim Frost, the annual trip to the northernmost part of Denmark means that he can combine his profession with his love of nature: hunting and the rich and varied bird life. After having sailed from village to village to diagnose and operate ‘local’ eyes, a trip in a dog sled, breathing in the greatness of the Greenland nature, is both a relaxing and revitalising experience, says Kim Frost. In addition to nature, this busy specialist derives energy for his many activities from literature and classical music.
