Aarhus – from Viking town to knowledge city

Aarhus is the second-largest city in Denmark and the metropolis of Jutland, a modern city with a visionary outlook – and also an atmospheric town characterised by a strong sense of community and security.

Today, the old Viking town has grown into a knowledge city with an international vision. Undergoing constant change and development. In a few years, the population of Aarhus will have grown to more than 300,000.

The Port of Aarhus is the largest container port in Denmark and an important northern Euro-pean transport hub. We belong to the world elite within IT, architecture and foods – and all in all the Aarhus region is a leading growth centre in Scandinavia.

Aarhus is the no. 1 study town in Denmark with the highest number of students relative to the number of inhabitants, and the city is home to a large number of excellent educational institu-tions catering for a total of about 40,000 students.

The popularity of Aarhus is not least due to its distinctive pulse and thriving atmosphere. A lively riverside scene, a multitude of shops and cafés, the nearness of sea and woods and the extensive offering of cultural and leisure-time activities, theatre and many music genres.

Smiling, full of joie de vivre and warmth. That is how we know our city, and that is how we would like it to be known to the outside world. This is the reason why Aarhus has introduced a new logo, reflecting Aarhus’s adoption of a contemporary version of the old expression “City of Smiles”, which dates from 1938.

Aarhus has plenty of reason to be happy. The city is characterised by optimism and growth and is ready to face the many opportunities and challenges presented by globalisation. Now and in future.
