Cruise ships in Aarhus

Aarhus from the sea

With its undulating coastline and green woods, the approach to the port of Aarhus and the city is a perfect welcome for cruise ships arriving from near and far. Visitors immediately feel at home thanks to the scenic surroundings and the city’s obvious charm, and with the port’s location close to the city centre, there is ample opportunity for them to make the most of what the city has to offer while their ship is in port.

If passengers want to go shopping, Aarhus has it all: large department stores selling everything the heart could possibly desire, modern shopping centres such as Bruun’s Galleri, and a wealth of small and interesting specialist shops selling brand goods. For visitors wanting to sightsee, the narrow cobbled streets and mu-seums such as the ARoS art museum and The Old Town top the list. Moreover, Aarhus has everything from hotdog stands to outstanding international cuisine at the city’s gourmet res-taurants.

It is not without reason that the number of luxury cruise ships has risen since the first dock-ed at the port in 1995. Every year, about 25 cruise ships call at Aarhus, bringing with them about 25-30,000 passengers who come from the USA, the UK and Germany, but also from other European countries. When the cruise ship passengers disembark, they are usually receiv-ed by representatives from VisitAarhus who distribute tourist information and generally help the passengers to make the most of their visits, which are often brief.

However, Aarhus is a popular destination for other reasons than being a city with much to offer. The international cruise ship fleets see Aarhus as a gateway to the Danish mainland. Thanks to its central location in East Jutland, Aarhus is a good starting point for passengers wanting to visit Ebeltoft, Legoland in Billund or Hans Christian Andersen’s house in Odense.

VisitAarhus is collaborating with the Port of Aarhus to boost the number of cruise ships that visit the port – for the benefit of Aarhus and cruise ship passengers alike.
