The Danish Warmblood Society

The Danish Warmblood Society is Denmark’s biggest horse-breeding society with about 5,000 members. In the course of the year numerous activities are arranged for members as well as gradings and selections. Only good horses can be approved for breeding, which ensures advances and quality.

For several hundred years, Danes have bred horses and have always ranked among the best in the world. This tradition and know-how lives on in the Danish Warmblood Society.

Today, most Danish riders ride on Danish Warmblood Society horses.

Membership offers many advantages:

•  The possibility of participating in all the events organised by the Danish Warmblood

    Society.

•  A magazine for members is published once a month. The magazine contains a wealth of

information about breeding, riding, feeding, veterinary questions, where and when events

organised by the Danish Warmblood Society are held, as well as a lots of other useful

information for horse owners and breeders.

•  It is easy to obtain help and advice.

•  The possibility of taking out insurance at favourable rates.

•  Members are able to join the Danish Warmblood Society’s sales initiatives, and thereby

enjoy the fruits of the Danish Warmblood Society’s marketing.

•  Members can participate in the Danish Warmblood Society’s well-run training scheme.

•  Young people aged 8-25 can become members of the Danish Warmblood Society at

   favourable prices.

HRH Princess Benedikte is patron of the Danish Warmblood Society

The princess owns several Danish warmblood horses, and is herself a keen horsewoman and breeder.

If you are interested in riding and horse breed-ing, it is a good idea to become a member of the Danish Warmblood Society. The Danish Warmblood Society has several thousand members both in Denmark and abroad, making it one of the largest horse-breeding organisations in Europe – and there is room for even more enthusiastic breeders!

Organisation

The Danish Warmblood Society is a democratic organisation run by a central committee. The members of the central committee are selected by each of the association’s seven regional districts. Each regional district has its own committee and its own members’ activities.

Looking good is now no longer enough

To ensure that a Danish warmblood horse is a proper riding horse with the right qualities, both mares and stallions are tested. Looking good is now no longer enough – using the horses is equally important.

The Danish Warmblood Society only grades the best stallions as sires for future generations.

The breeding aim – in brief

A Danish warmblood horse is a noble, well-bon-ed and lithe riding horse with excellent riding qualities and general health. It is able to perform well at either jumping or dressage competitions at international level. The aim of breeding is described in detail at www.varmblod.dk.

The Danish Warmblood Society – an international success

Over the years, many international riders have enjoyed considerable success on Danish warmblood horses. There are always a number of skilled Danish warmblood horses competing at European championships, world championships and at the Olympics. At the Olympic Games in Athens, several countries had Danish warmblood horses on their teams.

The dressage horse of the century was a Danish Warmblood Society horse

The Danish Warmblood Society enjoys a particularly good reputation for breeding dressage horses. In 1999, Marzog was selected by an international panel of judges as being “The Best Dressage Horse of the Century” ahead of a string of more famous horses. He won this outstanding title with the help of his skilled rider, Anne Grethe Törnblad.

The Danish Warmblood Society’s jumpers’ programme

The Danish Warmblood Society’s programme for jumpers is intended to systematise, develop and improve the society’s breeding of jumpers so that, within the next few years, Danish Warmblood Society horses are always ranked among the Top 10 horses worldwide. To achieve this goal, a special department has been set up for breeding jumpers; this is an integrated part of the Danish Warmblood Society’s breeding programme.

Horses accepted onto the programme will carry a special jumper logo in the national centre’s horse database as well as in various catalogue entries. This signals that each horse is of remark-ably high quality and that it meets the high requirements that are a condition for breeding jumpers.

Glorious horse days

The two major horse-breeding events of the year are the Elite Mare Show in late summer and the National Stallion Show in the spring.

The National Stallion Show involves a Gala Show, the National Championships for Young Horses, dressage and show-jumping competi-tions and an auction, and is the biggest horse event in Denmark.

Some of the most outstanding Danish horses are shown at the Elite Mare Show and the National Stallion Show.

Auction
Breeders, riders and owners of Danish Warm-blood Society horses from both Denmark and abroad take the opportunity to participate at the two large auctions which are held each year in connection with the National Stallion Show and the Elite Mare Show. Every year the auction halls are packed with people wanting to experience the air of excitement and anticipation be-fore the final bid is made for each lot and the hammer falls. Auctions are also arranged during the year in some of the Danish Warmblood Society districts. The horses, whether they are for riding or breeding, can also be seen at the Danish Warmblood Society’s many events, or on our sales database at wwww.danskvarmblod.dk.

The Danish Warmblood Society’s aptitude tests and Young Horse Champion
Every year, the Danish Warmblood Society organises championships for all young horses with a view to obtaining data which can be used in the breeding work.

World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses
The Danish Warmblood Society is the only Danish breeding society that is a member of the worldwide breeding organisation, the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH); its president is Jan Pedersen, chairman of the Danish Warmblood Society. Among other things, WBFSH organises world championships for young horses in dressage and jumping. WBFSH’s main secretariat is based at the Danish Warmblood Society at Vilhelmsborg, the Danish National Equestrian Centre.

Guarantee of identity
The Danish Warmblood Society’s logo, the crown above the wave, is carried by the des-cendents of prize-winning horses. An internationally recognised pedigree is issued for each horse, guaranteeing descent and identity.
