The Steno Museum

The Steno Museum – The Danish Museum for the History of Science and Medicine – is located in the University Park, and is part of the University of Aarhus. The museum has one of the largest collections of scientific equipment in Denmark, giving visitors a good idea of the history of natural and medical science from historical times until the present day. The museum’s exhibitions feature men and women, events, discoveries and phenomena of key significance for scientific cultural history. The museum houses instruments and experimental set-ups which invite visitors to become involved in exploring nature.

The museum has a planetarium where it is possible to see stars and planets far better than from most other locations. The planetarium is equipped with the latest equipment which can make spectators feel they have been removed to far-away places or other times. The medical herb garden is stocked with more than 300 species. The water sculpture in the garden is a tribute to one of Denmark’s greatest scientists, Niels Stensen (Steno).

In 2009, the museum is opening a completely new underground extension. Here, to a far greater extent than in the present museum, the public, including children and young people in education, will be able to see the fascinating world of natural and medical science through a mix of exhibitions, experiences, activities and a presentation of research results and current scientific events.

By offering a wide choice of activities and targeted educational programmes, the museum will contribute to enhancing the position of natural science as an important part of our culture.
